Coach Wannstedt's Monday Press Briefing
Aug. 18, 2008
Head Coach Dave Wannstedt Training Camp Day 14 Quotes August 18, 2008
On naming a starting quarterback: “Technically we will finish camp after our scrimmage on Wednesday. Once we finish up we will evaluate the film and finalize our depth charts at every position. In fairness to everyone we need to have one more scrimmage.
“Wednesday is the official end of camp. Then we have the Fanfest on Thursday where we’ll work against ourselves. It won’t be a physical type of practice. Then we will officially break camp and start talking about the opener.”
On escaping injuries this year: “Well we felt pretty good going into last year as well and then we lost (Bill) Stull in the first game and (Gus) Mustakas in the second. However, for the amount of contact we have had this year I would say we are relatively healthy. We have our bumps and bruises but the guys are fighting through it.”
On Lucas Nix playing on the first team: “(Joe) Thomas was a little inconsistent today. We have to make sure everyone understands that they have to prove themselves each day; it doesn’t matter if you are a senior or a freshman.”
On the offensive line’s progress: “I thought offensively today might have been the best set of practices we have had. We blocked well, caught well, ran well and threw well today.”
On Greg Romeus: “We just rested Greg today. His hamstring was a little sore so we let him do a lot of work on the bike this afternoon.”
On Austin Ransom switching to defense: “(Austin) Ransom is a smart and tough guy. He’s one of our keys on special teams. We’re looking at him as a nickel linebacker where he may be able to help us in some situations.”
On the cornerback battle between Jovani Chappel and Ricky Gary: “(Jovani) Chappel and (Aaron) Berry have been steady all camp but (Ricky) Gary has had a great camp. He has closed the gap on those two guys. He’s so much further than where he was last season at this time.”
